Important GMRS Operating Guidelines:
-
Power Output: GMRS radios can transmit with up to 50 watts of power.
-
Repeaters: GMRS allows for the use of repeaters, which can extend your range, and is common in emergency and group communications.
-
Family Members: Your license covers you and your immediate family (spouse, children, etc.), but it does not cover friends or extended family members.
Tips for GMRS Radio Use:
-
Proper Etiquette: Always follow good radio etiquette, such as identifying your call sign and avoiding excessive use of the radio.
-
License Call Sign: Once you are licensed, you will be assigned a call sign. This must be used when operating GMRS radios.
-
Equipment: Ensure that your GMRS radios are properly certified for use. Unlicensed radios may not meet the power and frequency regulations.
Obtaining a GMRS license is a straightforward process that doesn't require an exam but does involve registration with the FCC and a small fee. Whether you're using GMRS radios for family communication, outdoor adventures, or emergency preparedness, having a GMRS license gives you legal access to important communication channels.
